I have always listened sympathetically to friends and families who have back issues but I had no idea how difficult and extremely painful it can be. In 2012, right after I moved I experienced the agony first-hand. I had some back aches due to unpacking but nothing that I thought was serious. Then, one weekend, I sat down and was unable to get up. The pain was beyond description. Suddenly I was a complete invalid – unable to even go to the bathroom without complete support. With a young son and a husband who always travelled I was in a panic. I desperately did not want to call an ambulance and go to the hospital.
I knew from other friends and family this would likely lead to back surgery, maybe even multiple back surgeries.
Luckily for me, a friend contacted Joan Law from Steps & Providence and she literally saved my health and sanity. Joan was amazing. She conducted a Home Therapy session, assessed the situation, gave me detailed instructions on how to stabilize my back and let it heal. She was always available for reassurance whenever I had issues during the first few frightening days.
Once my back stabilized, I went to her clinic for physical therapy. With the clinic’s state-of-art equipment and her expert advice, my back recovered as quickly as humanly possible. Since then, I have referred friends to Joan and they have been equally impressed with her knowledge, expertise and pro-active care. Additionally, all back sufferers should see a physical therapist FIRST to see if there are methods to heal and strengthen the back, since painkillers and back surgery should really be the options of the last resort.
